Man this tune is super funky. Sput is the truth. Props to Mike for bringing the nasty on this tune. I think they could bang this one in the club. While I think the ending is “neat” its just too much for me. It was dope with the middle part dont always need the break down.I mean don’t get me wrong the break down is super nasty but I don’t know I really like the middle, SM would have killed that! hats off to the guys for this one!

Travelers

This is an amazing song. The only question I wonder is how much Eric Harlands drumming makes this song. I do think that Aaron wrote it with him in mind and so in this way it is perfect but this song as a beautiful flow. I mean the dotted quarter feeling under the melody really works beautifully. I was actually surprised to hear some people not into it,but thus is jazz =)

The Rock by John Raymond

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfLSCDgkXPQ&feature=relmfu

I have been looking online for songs that I like from a writers perspective.(not to say that the playing is killing) I really like the motion of this melody. I am really checking out some amazing music these days. This is just one of the many songs I have heard that have inspired me to write. I really want to get more into the way I like to write and play. Which is based on a simple idea that just builds but leaves room for you to add from the rhythm section.

Great Alto Playing

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BynPQiMKpck

Man I really have to limit my listens to Miguel because every time I check him out he just takes over my playing. I admire his amazing abilities on the horn and knowledge of the music but I just like how much it seems he just is himself. It seems like he is playing exactly what he wants with little to no concern for critics. The only other person I feel that is more free and or comfortable in just being himself is Mark Turner. I hope one day I can inspire someone to just be themselves.

African Drums

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf1fgCe0Aig

So this week I am trying a new way of practice. I am just focusing on the rhythmic aspect of music. So I have been listening to a lot of drums from all over. From drum loops too African and Indian drums. It has been very interesting to say the least. When I got this video I was drawn in to how they were expressing the music through their dance. So I try to bring it full circle and play lines that was based of the way they were dancing. I found it to be very freeing in terms of my thoughts, ideas and phrases. Very much interested to see where this road takes me.

Concept update

I think it is good to express your thoughts and feelings in words. Something about articulating a thought, helps to bring it into reality. The last time I tried to think of what my music was or what it was about, all I could think was it was about movement, or motion. I still think that motion is the core of what I want to do. Physical, emotional and spiritual motion, I want to move people through my music. Also I am moving to a place where I do not think of solos. I think a big part of why Jazz disconnects … Continue reading Concept update

Christian Scott

Recently I have been listening to a lot of Christian Scott. I had always been aware of him and knew a little of his sound but recently I have really been checking him out. I am trying to decide the direction I want to go for my next album. I really like the current sound of his style and also the openness. I feel the music I want to make can or can not have solos. Either way the music should stand
